Artistic and Cultural Significance

Erté’s Objects d’Art demonstrate how naturally his artistic vision moved between sculpture and the decorative arts. Figures, faces, costumes, natural forms, and symbolic imagery become integral parts of vases, bowls, candelabras, and other functional objects.

These works reveal Erté’s ability to transform everyday forms into theatrical compositions. Their sculptural surfaces, elaborate patinas, and ornamental details connect his achievements in fashion, stage design, illustration, and bronze sculpture with the European tradition of objets d’art.

Within the Erté Legacy Collection, the 13 Objects d’Art offer an important dimension of Erté’s final creative evolution and show how fully his visual language could inhabit three-dimensional form.

Documentation and Preservation

Brooke Trace personally examined and photographed each of the 13 Objects d’Art, recording the front, back, stamped edition number, signature, and identifying details. Brooke Trace also created a 360-degree video of every object, establishing a comprehensive visual record of the complete group.

Brooke Trace scanned, organized, and cataloged the original publishing gallery receipts and certificates of authenticity as part of the Erté Legacy Collection archive. This documentation supports provenance research, scholarship, exhibition planning, publication, and digital education while preserving the relationship between each object and its records.
